              How are HELLA Products Tested?

              All HELLA products are designed to deliver quality and performance that can withstand the extreme conditions that heavy-duty trucks, tractors and utility vehicles are exposed to on a daily basis. This means that drivers and fleet operators can rely on HELLA quality, even when faced with impacts from stones, extreme temperatures or unremitting vibration.

              Product Testing
              • Heat, humidity and cold test - In temperature cycle tests, HELLA products are exposed to temperature fluctuations from - 40 to +100 degrees Celsius in climatic exposure test cabinets lasting up to 48 hours.
              • Spray water test - Tested under real environmental conditions in universal spray booths. fitted with devices for rain, flood water, jets of water and spray mist.
              • Pressure washer test - The products are tested at a water pressure of up to 120 bar and a water temperature of +85 degrees Celsius in a testing facility, producing the conditions in a carwash or when a pressure washer is used to clean the vehicle.
              • Vibration test - This test simulates the behaviour of the products on a “roughroad track” and measures the reactions of the vehicle, for example, to potholes, dirt roads, road metal, gravel, fields and farm tracks.
              • Dust test - The products are tested for dust-proofness using unfired Portland cement. The test is performed either in test functional mode or by generating high and low pressure in the test object.
              • Immersion test - This test uses an immersion tube providing a water depth of either 1 metre or 6 metres. A positive pressure test at up to 1.6 bar is also performed in an immersion tank.

              What are the different types of bulb technologies?

              • Halogen - Probably one of the most popular type of bulbs used in lights as they are cheap to produce and normally fairly simple to replace on vehicles. The filament inside the bulb is made of tungsten which is sealed inside the glass with halogen gas. Most halogen headlamps produce a colour temperature between approximately 3200K and 5000K.
              • Xenon - Producing a brighter and whiter light compared to halogen lights, Xenon HID bulbs are slowing becoming the standard light technology for premium car manufacturers. Although they are more expensive that halogen they do tend to have a longer lifespan. A xenon HID, (High Intensity Discharge), bulb operates differently to a halogen one. Instead of the filament glowing and emitting light, the gas inside a xenon bulb is charged electrically which produces the the bright white light. One disadvantage is that xenon bulbs can take a few seconds to reach full brightness.
              • LED - LED bulbs are relatively a new technology which are becoming quite popular as they can produce a bright white light, are more power efficient and have a long lifetime. Light-emitting diodes (LED) are semiconductors. As electrons pass through this type of semiconductor, it turns into light. As the bulbs themselves do not have a filament, LEDs technically have no parts that wear down over time, meaning that they last much longer than Xenon or halogen headlight bulbs.

              Can my existing lights be combined with another lighting technology to improve illumination?

              Yes there is no need to use the same technology so mixing halogen, xenon and LEDs is possible. A cheap option would be to combine existing halogen lighting with new and efficient LED worklights. This keeps the capital outlay low and allows you to benefit from greater luminous efficiency right away. To ensure even illumination, it is important that new lights are always installed in pairs.
