Every now and then a tractor’s door or window glass can become cracked or damaged by a stone being flicked up and hitting the glass or when an act of vandalism or a vehicle accident causing the glass to break. If a rock or stone just chips the glass then this can easily be repaired by a qualified repair service but if the chip has turned into a crack then the panel should be replaced as soon as possible. A cracked window can be a challenge that shouldn’t be ignored because whilst it may seem ok you cannot go anywhere without the potential for it breaking and causing harm to the driver, passengers or third parties.

The glass in your cab helps to shield the occupants from noise, weather and keeping your cab free from dust, debris, rain and snow. There is also the obvious security issue if a pane is missing allowing for easy access to the cab for the contents to be removed, or in the worst case, having the tractor stollen. By replacing the glass, it can lower the above issues as the cab glass is relative easy to replace by a competent mechanic or specialist glass installer.

Basic tips for replacing a new windowpane in a modern tractor

              1. Order your new glass from your supplier or search here and filter by make and model
              2. When the new glass arrives, make sure that it is the correct part and that it will fit your tractor, errors do happen when ordering so it's easier to spot the mistake at this early stage!
              3. You can save money by removing the old pieces of hardware, such as handles, hinges and gas strut brackets (if appropriate). Be sure to clean these and remove the old glass which can be quite difficult to remove so be careful and wear appropriate PPE.
              4. To protect the new glass it may be worth while to place it on a soft surface to avoid scratches or unintentional damage.
              5. Refit the hardware to the new glass panel, taking care not to over tighten the fasteners which could crack the new pane.
              6. Inspect the old window seal. If you find any signs of the rubber being perished, chunks missing or breaks then this should be replaced. Otherwise remove the old glass shards from the strip.
              7. Place the strip around the window ensuring that it is placed the right way up.
              8. Keep moving the strip around until it matches the shape of the pane itself.
              9. Start to push the strip onto the glass edge. Take your time as a good fit will be worth the effort.
              10. Once the seal is in place offer the window up to the cab.
              11. Our best tip here is that you should ask somebody to help you at this stage. One person can hold the window in place whilst the other attaches the hinges in the tractor.
              12. Locate the hinge threads through the openings in the window and secure with the correct grommets and nuts.
              13. Attach the gas struts to their brackets
              14. Test the window to make sure that it opens and closes with ease and that a good seal is achieved when the window is closed.
