Vision and Security Around the Farm

With the threat of rural crime never far from every farmers mind, the MalpasOnline team have put together some product ideas to help combat this growing issue around the farm. Our Vision and Security guide will lead you through our current product range to deter thieves from stealing your machinery or livestock using physical barriers as well as electronic solutions for monitoring the yard.

There are a variety of security devices design to keep your possessions safe. This ranges in technological capabilities and related to that is the cost. Starting at the most cost-effective solution there are chains, padlocks and wheel clamps before moving onto more advanced systems such as surveillance cameras.

Physical Security – Using Chains, Locks and Clamps to Secure Items

              Chains

By far the oldest and most used method of security, chains can be used in many ways from securing gates to immobilising your quad bike or similar. This relative cheap form of security can be coupled with a ground chain anchor where the chain is feed through and secured with a suitable high security padlock. We stock a variety of chain lengths that are produced from either hardened steel or hardened steel alloy (higher security level), and made by Squire, a world renown supplier of security devices who have been securing items since 1780.

              Padlocks

These come in all shapes, sizes, materials and they can also be graded according to the level of security that they offer. As with most things in life, the more you can afford then the better the product will be. As an example, our cheapest Sparex padlock (S.20771) comes in at £3.42 (exc. VAT), this is a metal combination lock which offers a low security level, where as at the top of our range is the SS65CS Squire stronghold padlock made from hardened steel (S.26772) which comes in at £104 (exc. VAT). The differences between the two locks are the actual locking mechanism and the type of steel used on the shackles making the more expensive lock a higher level of security. Also the Squire lock has a hardened steel shroud covering the shackle to deter thieves getting through to the shackle itself. So it pays to select a correct type of lock depending on what you need to secure.

              D Locks

Used mostly to secure cycles or motorbikes (including ATVs). These type of locks have a large ‘D’ shaped shackle that can attach a cycle frame to a solid structure, such as a bike rack, and are then locked using a strengthened body. They can also be used as a wheel lock on a motorbike which stops the wheel from turning which makes it difficult for the bike to be ridden away.

              Wheel Clamps

              The earliest models of this type of vehicle immobilisation was thought to of been around the 1920’s. Over time the wheel clamp has continued to grow in technological advances to deter even the most determined thief, even those who were stealing for ‘joyriding’. Unfortunately the wheel clamp has gained some bad press recently as is notoriously unpopular with unauthorised parkers on private land. The early clamps enabled an owner to effectively ‘hobble’ a car wheel making it difficult for the car to be moved. We offer two types of wheel clamps;

              1. Universal wheel clamp for cars, caravans, trailers and motorbikes
              2. Wheel clamp to fit car wheels from 13” to 17”. This model actually covers the wheel bolts making it difficult to remove the wheel.

              Physical Security FAQ

Should I use a D Lock instead of a chain and padlock?

A D Lock is usually more portable than a chain and lock due to its weight and size which makes it a favourite amongst commuters. Also the lightweight D lock can be cheaper than a decent lock and chain. However, if weight and cost isn’t a problem then a heavy duty chain and high level security lock would be a better option, especially when coupled with a ground anchor.

Vision – CCTV To Protect Property and Livestock

A convenient method of maintaining a constant view of your farm is to install a CCTV system to watch over buildings and livestock whilst you are not there. The advances in wireless CCTV technology have enabled the easy installation of cameras to be placed further away from the control/recording box allowing greater flexibility of adding new cameras as the need arises.

Benefits of Installing a CCTV System

              1. Improves time management around the farm by keeping an eye on operations from anywhere as you move about on other tasks.
              2. Any unwanted visitors can be watched from the safety of your house and their movements tracked and recorded.
              3. Spot any environmental problems before they become too dangerous and allowing you to reduce the risk by acting sooner.
              4. Modern systems are easy to install
              5. Internet and mobile phone apps allow your property to be monitored whilst you’re away from the property.
              6. Most CCTV systems have a wide variety of additional accessories to compliment the system such as fence alarms and additional cameras.
              7. Aids animal welfare, especially during times of calving, where you can monitor and take immediate action if the animal becomes distressed during birthing.

At MalpasOnline we recommend the LUDA FarmCam HD system, a robust and wireless camera system that gives you an overview and control of your farm from any location. The system allows you to connect up to 4 wireless cameras to a range of 1250m. The captured images can be viewed on a TV, PC or Smart phone (internet connection required).

              (LUDA FarmCam HD Benefits)

How the LUDA FarmCam HD System Works?

              1. The camera monitors your animals. The signal is transmitted through the cable (9- 18m) to the outdoor antenna.
              2. The signal is sent wirelessly to the office/home.
              3. The receiver receives the signal through its outdoor antenna connected with cable (9-18m).
              4. By connecting the receiver to your internet router you can see your animals/barn/buildings/farm wherever you go, using any smartphone, tablet or computer connected to the internet.
              5. By connecting the receiver to your TV you can see the camera picture there as well!

              CCTV FAQ

Can cameras on a farm be hidden?

Unfortunately no. People around the farm must be aware that CCTV is being used due to data protection principles and human rights. The obvious choice for warning people that CCTV is in operation is to place signage around the area where the cameras are operating.

Can you point cameras to public rights of way and neighbouring properties?

The position of your CCTV camera system should not be directed towards public rights of way or towards other people’s property in order that the filming of unnecessary images is knowing captured.
