Nuffield Parts

In the mid 1940’s Lord Nuffield, company owner of the Morris Motor Limited, formed Nuffield Tractors in response to the government’s request for a British made tractor to be built to help with the after effects of WWII. With a heritage started out from the mechanisation and design of the Crusader tank in co-operation with Dr Herbert Merritt and Mr Claude Culpin the first Nuffield tractor was developed as a prototype in May 1946 which sent out to various European locations for testing. However, due to steel shortages it wasn’t until 2 years later that the first tractor went into full production at the Morris plant in Birmingham. These early machines were powered using a Morris Commercial 4 cylinder engine that provided 38hp at 2000rpm but in 1950 the engine choice was increased to three which included the efficient (and popular) Perkins P4 diesel engines.

In 1951 the Morris Motors Ltd became part of the BMC (British Motor Company) but Nuffield continued to make tractors until the late 1960s until the amalgamation of the Nuffield parent company (British Motor Holdings) and the Leyland Motor Company to become British Leyland. The Nuffield logo and poppy red paintwork were used until 1969 when the tractors were renamed as Leyland Tractors and the livery was changed to a new Leyland corporate two-tone blue colour scheme. Popular Nuffield tractor models include the 3DL, 4DM, 3/42, 4/60 and the 10 series 10/42 and 10/60.
