Dealing with Vintage Tractor Parts
Assembling vintage tractor parts and restoring classic tractors have become a growing hobby for many enthusiasts. While some would be contented with patching up an antique tractor that they have inherited and get it back on the field, some would go the extra mile and have their classic tractors be displayed at cross-country shows and tractor rallies.
For tractor-restoration hobbyists, there are two things that would define the complexity of a restoration project: the condition plus age of the machine, and the availability of the parts. Here are some tips on where can people normally find vintage tractor parts.
Availability Depending on the Tractor Manufacturer
Definitely, the amount of difficulty in restoring an old tractor will be depending on its manufacturer and model. Some tractors such as Ford and David Brown have replacement parts that are relatively easy to find since these manufacturers are still being used to do their intended function, which is for mechanized agricultural functions such as land tillage. However, for the more obscure manufacturers such as Oliver, finding parts can be a bit more challenging
Local Tractor Dealers
Most of the time, going to the local tractor replacement parts dealer is the ideal first step in finding parts for an antique tractor. It helps in saving time when searching for parts, especially if the dealer caters to a wide range of manufacturers. However, it would be wise to do a quick search on the Internet to see if the local store has an online catalogue to see if they carry the parts that you would need.
Getting Aid from Clubs
If online dealers and local stores do not seem to help in the search for vintage tractor parts, another useful source of information would be tractor clubs. If you are looking for Allis Chalmers or Massey Ferguson parts, you may want to check out local clubs in your area. Most clubs are comprised of members based on the model of their tractors, and they will be most eager to help out a fellow hobbyist with a similar agricultural machine. You may also find being a member of a club that caters to the same model or manufacturer of tractor extremely useful - apart from getting tips on where to find vintage tractor parts, they will also be able to help you in assemblies, or even lend you tools for repair or reconstruction.
