Our top tips to help you keep your farm secure:
- Put up signs - to avoid trespassers on your farm you will have to let them know where the boundaries of your property lie. The easiest way to do this is by using signs. These signs should be made out of materials that are long lasting and only need to say something as simply as 'Private Property, no trespassing'.
- Physical barriers - to secure buildings invest in good locks for the doors and windows. Ensure all security fencing, hedges and walls are checked regularly - they should be robust and well maintained. By locking gates and lowering security barriers you will be able to restrict access to your farm - the fewer ways in the harder it will be for people to gain access and remove large agriculture equipment.
- Use a monitoring system - by installing a secure monitoring system, such as those offered by Luda.Farm, you can maintain a constant watch on your farm using your phone, tablet or PC. If you do see any suspicious activity around the yard then they should be repoted to the police as soon as possible.
- Add alarms to vulnerable areas and/or vehicles - There are a wide range of alarms and immobilisers that can be retro fitted to older vehicles, plus for added security, you can add physical security devices such as chains and wheel locks. If you use physical devices then make sure that they are used to immobilise vehicles, plant, trailers and machinery when not in use. Remove machinery and vehicles from fields overnight and if possible keep them in a securely locked building and remember always to remove keys from unattended vehicles.
- Consider security lighting for key areas - You can use two levels of lighting, a working level and a lower security level. Using low energy lighting will keep the cost down. Ensure that valuable equipment is also lit as this alone can be a good deterrent.
- Make sure equipment have security markings - you can use tamper proof stickers, UV spray or SmartWater as an ideal way to mark your equipment.
- Seek advice - contact the police (telephone 101) or your local Police and Community Safety Partnership (PCSPs) for crime prevention advice.
- Anti-theft deterrents - consider using anti-climb paint with a warning to say it has been used.
